Broadly speaking, open source is any software which allows users to make changes to its source code or distribute it to others. Open-source software is usually developed in a collaborative, community-oriented manner - see Open Source Initiative and their motto “Guaranteeing the `our` in source”. Dating back to when students and teachers used to write software and share it for academic research purposes, open-source continues to be a point of pride for geeks around the world.
